White Sox Back to their Old Ways
After watching yet another White Sox loss, it seems like the team has reverted back to their 2007 form. The hitters aren’t hitting. The fielders aren’t catching the ball, and the bullpen looks as bad as ever.
Ultimately, you can’t blame the pitchers since their ERA is under four. What you can do is look at a group of hitters who aren’t doing the job. Shawn Marcum and Jesse Litsch owned the Sox on two consecutive days by working the strike zone and keeping their pitch counts down. The White Sox have done their part by swinging freely and not showing the patience that made them far better hitters in the first half of April. They went 19 consecutive innings without scoring in Toronto before Jermaine Dye put an end to their pain with a solo (of course) home run.
I’m not saying the White Sox season is over or that they should give up on the season. What I believe needs to be done is a complete re-shuffling of the order. I think it means trying the guys who are hitting need to be tried earlier in the order. Carlos Quentin has been a pleasant surprise at .287. A.J. Pierzynski is .297. With these two guys hitting, it’d be nice for one for at least A.J. to bat third and maybe Quentin fifth or sixth. Juan Uribe, on the other hand, really doesn’t have any business being on this team considering his horrific batting average and sliding defensive skills. Unfortunately, there really isn’t anyone else to put at second with Alexei Ramirez being an unproven commidity and Pablo Ozuna being very unreliable defensively.
It looks like another long year for the White Sox. One can only hope the Rush go very far in the playoffs to keep Chicago sports from being too depressing.
