Celtics Step Up
LeBron James and Paul Pierce has the kind of classic playoff duel that harkens back to the days of Bird against Wilkins. Because of Pierce’s superior supporting cast stepping up and James missing key shots, the Celtics survived another seven game series. Despite the Celtics inability to play on the road, they’ve managed to win two series and will now have a true test in the Detroit Pistons. The Pistons may not have one of the best records in the NBA, but they’ve been one of the most impressive teams this postseason ever since finding themselves against the Philadelphia 76ers.
For the Cavaliers, they came into the game with little pressure, but one would assume James will take a whole lot of guff for missing some key shots at the end of the game. I’ve never believed James is a Michael Jordan. He’s at his best when being able to distribute the basketball throughout the game and only score when he has to. In this game, James scored his 45, but no one else seemed to be able to get into a rhythm. No one except Delonte West could even get into double figures.
Pierce scored 41 points and managed to get some additional help. Kevin Garnett had a fouble-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Even role players like P.J. Brown and Eddie House stepped up their game.
For the Celtics, they need to hope that Ray Allen starts having big games because they will certainly need it against a motivated Pistons team. The Pistons have got to be tired of all the Celtics talk on ESPN. With their experience and savvy, the Pistons are very capable of winning the Eastern Conference once again. I know one thing. The Celtics should prepare themselves for seven more tough games.
